Chandrataal Lake, or the 'Moon Lake,' is a high-altitude lake of breathtaking beauty situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau in the Himalayas. The lake gets its name from its crescent shape. Its color changes throughout the day, from deep turquoise to emerald green and electric blue, reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks and clear skies. The lake is surrounded by alpine meadows and is a protected wetland. Camping near the lake under the brilliant, star-studded night sky is one of the most magical experiences in Spiti.

Camping is strictly banned within 2-3 km of the lake to protect its fragile ecosystem; use the designated campsite area
Do not wash utensils, clothes, or bathe in the lake water
Carry all plastic waste and garbage back from the lake site
Walk gently on the surrounding meadows and stick to the defined paths

Can we drive up to the lake?
Vehicles can go up to the parking lot, which is 1.5 km away from the lake. From there, you must take an easy, flat walk to the water.
Is it very cold at night near Chandrataal?
Yes, temperatures routinely drop below freezing even in summer, so high-quality sleeping bags and heavy thermal layers are essential.
