Chang La is a high-altitude mountain pass that serves as the main gateway to the Pangong Lake, historically ranked as the third highest motorable pass in the world. Situated at a staggering altitude of 17,590 feet, the pass is named after the local temple of Changla Baba. The approach road is rugged, with steep hairpins and water streams (pagal nallahs) created by melting glaciers. Crossing the pass is a thrilling challenge for bikers, offering spectacular views of the snow-covered peaks and steep rocky valleys.
Responsible Travel & Etiquette
Do not stop at the pass for more than 10-15 minutes due to low oxygen levels
Ride slowly and carefully as the road near the summit can have ice patches and flowing water
Yield to uphill climbing heavy vehicles and military convoys
Wear heavy thermal and windproof layers to protect against the freezing winds

Is it difficult to cross on a bike?
Yes, it is one of the more challenging passes in Ladakh due to loose gravel, mud, and water crossings. Sturdy riding skills are recommended.
Is there a toilet or shop at the top?
Yes, there is a basic toilet and a small tea stall run by the military serving hot black tea.
