Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley, founded in the 14th century. Perched on a steep hill overlooking the Shyok River, it belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect. The highlight of the monastery is the majestic, 106-foot-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha (Future Buddha), which sits on a hilltop facing down the valley toward Pakistan as a symbol of peace and protection. The monastery houses ancient murals, scriptures, and offers spectacular views of the Nubra Valley sand dunes.
