Key Monastery

Key Monastery (Kye Gompa) is the largest and most iconic Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Spiti Valley. Perched dramatically on a volcanic cone-shaped hill, it resembles a majestic fortress built of stacked white mud-brick rooms. Established in the 11th century, it houses rare manuscripts, ancient murals, wind instruments, and weapons. The monastery is home to hundreds of young Lama monks who study here. The peaceful spiritual chanting, the smell of butter lamps, and the panoramic views of the Spiti River make it a highlight of the trip.
