Thiksey Monastery is the largest and most spectacular monastery in central Ladakh, famous for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Stacked in a series of white and red buildings on a rocky hill, the 12-story complex belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect. The highlights include the magnificent, two-story tall statue of Maitreya Buddha (Future Buddha) inside the temple, a rich collection of thangka paintings, and ancient stupas. The monastery offers a serene, spiritual atmosphere and spectacular views of the Indus Valley.
